Who we are

Independent criticism, no spin

We score only what we have actually watched, and we publish the rubric behind every number. No press-release rewrites, no sponsored ratings. Just dated, arguable criticism.

Surflix Reviews began with a simple observation: film and television ratings are everywhere and almost none of them tell you anything. Fan pages repeat marketing copy, aggregator scores measure how many people clicked, and a great deal of criticism is written by someone who watched the first forty minutes and the ending.

We built this site to occupy the space between: independent, rubric-driven film and television criticism, written by people who finish what they review, and who are willing to publish a score that disappoints both the fans and the studio.

What we publish

  • Reviews of films and series, scored on a published ten-point rubric
  • Rankings that cover the whole year, not just the titles everyone already agrees about
  • Methodology explainers, so the arithmetic behind every score is inspectable
  • Comparisons of the major rating systems and what each one actually measures
  • Practical guides to age ratings, watchlists and where titles are legitimately streaming

Our editorial standards

  • Information only. We publish writing. Nothing on this site is downloadable and we do not host, link to, or distribute any application, installer, or install file, ever.
  • Independent. No studio, distributor or streaming service reviews, approves, or pays for our coverage, and no score has ever been bought.
  • Show the work. Every score names the categories it was built from, and every review states its strongest counter-argument alongside its verdict.
  • Date everything. Scores carry a publication date and are revised openly when a later season, a director’s cut or a rewatch changes the picture.
  • Correct fast. When we are wrong, the correction goes at the top of the page, not silently into the text.

Who is behind it

The site is edited by Jack Rogers, who has written about film, television and consumer streaming since 2021. Every title reviewed here is watched start to finish, in release order, on the format it was made for, and every score is argued against before it is published.
