Streaming feels free once you’ve paid the subscription — until the data bill or the throttling notice arrives. Video is the biggest data hog most households have, and 4K roughly triples the appetite of Full HD. If you’re on any kind of cap, these numbers decide whether “just one more episode” is a problem.
Exact figures vary by service and content, but these are reliable planning estimates:
| Quality | Data per Hour | A 2-Hour Movie |
|---|---|---|
| SD (480p) | ~0.5–0.7 GB | ~1–1.5 GB |
| HD (720p) | ~1–1.5 GB | ~2–3 GB |
| Full HD (1080p) | ~2–3 GB | ~4–6 GB |
| 4K (2160p, HDR) | ~7–10 GB | ~14–20 GB |
Multiply by how you really watch and the totals get startling:
| Habit | At Full HD/month | At 4K/month |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour/day | ~60–90 GB | ~210–300 GB |
| 3 hours/day | ~180–270 GB | ~630–900 GB |
| A weekend binge (10 hrs) | ~20–30 GB | ~70–100 GB |
A single household watching 4K a few hours a day can push past a terabyte a month — enough to blow through most “fair usage” limits.
4K has four times the pixels of Full HD, and streaming it with HDR adds even more colour and brightness data per frame. The result is a much higher bitrate — the amount of data sent per second — which is what actually determines consumption, not the resolution label alone.
On a screen smaller than about six inches, your eyes can’t resolve 4K detail from normal viewing distance. Streaming 4K to a phone burns three times the data for a picture you literally cannot see. Cap mobile playback at Full HD or below.
Do the maths before the month, not after. Take your cap, subtract everything else you use data for, and divide the rest by the per-hour figures above. That tells you how many hours of each quality you can actually afford — and usually makes the case for defaulting to Full HD.
