How to Cancel a Streaming Subscription

Cancelling should take two minutes. Services make it feel like breaking up. Here’s how to leave cleanly — and where the hidden “cancel” button is actually buried.

Signing up takes one tap. Cancelling can feel like an obstacle course — and that’s deliberate. Services bury the button, offer last-minute discounts, and quietly downgrade you instead of letting you leave. Here’s how to cancel any subscription cleanly, whatever tricks are in the way.

Before You Cancel

  • Find out where you actually pay. Through the service’s own site? An app store? A bundle with your phone or broadband? That determines where you cancel — and it’s the number-one thing people get wrong.
  • Save your watchlist. Note what you were partway through so you can pick up later if you return.
  • Consider downgrading instead. If it’s the price you object to, an ad tier may be cheaper than cancelling outright.

The Universal Steps

Nearly every service follows the same path, however well hidden: open Account or Settings (usually on the website, not the TV app), find Membership or Plan, choose Cancel, decline the retention offers, and confirm. You’re only truly cancelled when you see a confirmation with an end date — not before.

Where You Subscribed Matters

This is the part that trips everyone up:

You signed up via…Cancel here
The service’s own websiteThat website’s account settings
An app store on your phoneYour app-store subscription settings — not the app
A phone or broadband bundleYour provider, not the streaming service

If you cancel in the wrong place, the charge keeps coming. Always cancel where the billing actually originates.

Dark Patterns to Watch For

  • The cancel link hidden several menus deep, or only on the desktop site.
  • A surprise discount that resets your resolve — fine to take, but know it’s a retention tactic.
  • “Pause” offered more prominently than “cancel.”
  • A downgrade dressed up to look like cancellation.
Screenshot the confirmation

If the charge reappears next month, a screenshot of your cancellation confirmation and its date is your evidence for a refund. No confirmation screen means you’re probably not cancelled — go back and finish the flow.

Cancelling Without Losing Everything

Most services keep your profile, history and watchlist for a while after you leave, so returning later usually picks up where you left off. That’s what makes the rotation approach painless — you can cancel now and come back for the next big show without starting from scratch.

Cancellation FAQ

Why can’t I find the cancel button in the app?
Because it’s often not there. If you subscribed through an app store, you cancel in your app-store subscription settings; if through the website, in the site’s account page — usually on desktop.
Will I lose my watch history if I cancel?
Usually not immediately — most services keep your profile and history for a period, so returning later restores your watchlist and progress.
Should I cancel or just downgrade?
If price is the issue, a cheaper ad tier may keep access for less. If you’ve simply run out of things to watch, cancel and rotate to another service.
What if I’m charged after cancelling?
Show the cancellation confirmation and date — screenshot it at the time — and request a refund. That record is your proof you cancelled.
